16-17 July 2019, Rabat, Morocco

The special national Workshop on the assessment of the level of oil spill response planning and readiness management was organized by the Secrétariat d’État chargé du Développement Durable of Morocco (SEDD) and the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), in accordance with the recommendations of the Sub-Regional Workshop on the use of RETOSTM held in Malta  from 24 to 26 April 2019.

The objective of the two-day Workshop was to enable senior maritime representatives from Morocco to develop hands-on working knowledge of the use, and advantages of the ARPEL’s Manual; Readiness Evaluation Tool for Oil Spills (RETOS™) as well as the 2008 International Oil Spill Conference (2008 IOSC Guidelines) in analysing and identifying gaps in the Moroccan national oil spill contingency plan.

Participants were also introduced to the Sea Alarm assessment tool to improve their national oiled wildlife capabilities.

Each participant departed the workshop with the required knowledge and tools to carry out the national self-assessment report including gap analysis, Global Performance Analysis and Global Improvement Programme of the Moroccan National oil spill contingency plan. A second national workshop bringing together all members of the National Commission against Accidental Marine Pollution will be held in early 2020 to conduct a comprehensive assessment.
